Meet Mike, a retired airline captain and entrepreneur living his best life in Puerto Plata.

COOL BREEZE IN PUERTO PLATA is a travel enthusiast and YouTube vlogger.

Cool Breeze: It's our pleasure to welcome Mike to dominicansoul.com. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Mike: My name is Mike from Atlanta, Georgia and I'm married. I'm a retired airline captain. I flew jumbo jets for 36 years. My wife is a nurse practitioner and flight attendant.

Mike: I've been here for two years now. When my wife and I first came down she wasn't very interested but I had the vision.

Mike: I saw the clean lifestyle of living and all the food was organic. It was like shopping at Whole Foods in Atlanta.

Cool Breeze: How do you feel about the people here in general?

Mike: The people are the most friendly that you would ever want to meet. For instance, if a Dominican family is having a party they will invite you in to sit down and eat with them. This is such a beautiful, beautiful place.

Cool Breeze: So true. I feel the same way about the people here. I've had similar experiences.

Mike: I'll say this now. Coming to the Dominican Republic was the best investment I've made in my life. Not in financial terms, but in terms of my health and my spirit. No stress. My family, especially my grandchildren, absolutely love it here. This is what reaping the fruits of your labor is all about.

Cool Breeze: Speaking of the fruits of your labor, you have a magnificent house. When I first saw it I thought it was an apartment complex.

Mike: I started building my home about a year before I retired and paid for everything in cash. In addition to being a former airline captain, I was also a general contractor. I supervised the construction and saved myself mucho dinero.

Mike: Nothing against the other islands but the DR is the last place in the Caribbean where you can buy land and build at affordable prices. There are great opportunities here.

Cool Breeze: You mentioned earlier that your wife didn't want to be here at first. How drastically has that changed?

Mike: Ha. Now she drags me here even though I still have a lot going on in the USA. Even though I'm retired I just have to stay busy. It keeps me going. I don't do it because I need the money. I just enjoy working on projects.

Cool Breeze: Mike, thank you for taking the time to share your story with us.

Mike: You're welcome. I appreciate you.
