When you come to visit Puerto Plata there is one thing that you must do at least one time: Go to the top of Mount Isabel de Torres. It is Puerto Plata's Statue of Liberty, St. Louis Arch, Golden Gate Bridge, Eiffel Tower, etc.
Mount Isabel is a big part of the reason how Puerto Plata got its name. Puerto Plata translated in English means "Silver Port". When Christopher Columbus first arrived here, he remarked that Mt. Isabel's foggy mountain top often had a silver like appearance. Thus the name Puerto Plata stuck.
Ride the cable car to the top of Mt. Isabel's 2,600 feet high peak. The cable car is available Monday through Saturday from 9:00AM to 6:00PM. The cost is RD$350. If you are into long nature hikes and up for a challenge, you can journey up on foot.
Once you get to the top, you will be greeted by the mountain's iconic Christ The Reedemer statue. Now when you're not too busy taking pictures with and of the statue(It's very contagious!), break away and explore the rest of the mountain. Mt. Isabel has a gorgeous botanical garden, a cave, a lagoon, several walking paths, lots of lush, beautiful plant life, a restaurant and a souvenir shop.
So don't forget. Check out Mount Isabel de Torres. It will be a memorable and worthwhile experience. Guaranteed! For more information call: 1 809-970-0501.
